How I Threw a Backyard Wedding in the Middle of a Pandemic - Vogue

It was the end to a perfect night. As the bride and groom drove off from the driveway of our home around 1 a.m., it was time to finally relax. One last glass in hand, my husband Daniel and I toasted the triumph of having just hosted an elegant small wedding at our home. It was the first we had ever given over the course of our own three-decade marriage – and, more notably, the first that was held during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But as we toasted each other,  we realized our celebration was two-weeks' premature. We now had to wait an agonizing 14 days to know if our strict safety measures had worked and that all 27 guests would be symptom-free.

I remember the exact moment when Allie Schmidt (now Allie Gillespie) texted my 24-year old daughter Florence with the request. Our multigenerational family of seven was two months into sheltering in place in our home in Michigan and after a snowy April, the sun was out and the temperatures rising. It was a refreshing change, with four of us working remotely.

“Here’s a question,” Florence asked, as we sat on the deck tapping away on our laptops. “If the governor eases restrictions on outdoor events, would you consider letting Allie get married here?” Allie, my daughter’s college roommate, and her fiancé Scott, had originally planned a mid-July wedding for 125 people in a park followed by a reception at one of the area’s most iconic restaurants.

Their large wedding was now canceled due to the pandemic. But since the couple was moving to California the week after their planned wedding date, they did not want to postpone the ceremony. As Allie said of their decision to press ahead with a small family wedding, “We figured we are getting married for better or worse, and this pandemic is pretty much the worst, so we should just move forward and start living those vows.”
