A shooting Tuesday in front of a barber shop on South 13th Street in Harrisburg killed a man, marking the 10th homicide of the year in the city.
The level of killings in the first half of this year has far outpaced last year, when four homicides were logged by the end of June. Tuesday’s killing at 4:40 p.m. was the third homicide in the month of June.
Police were called to the South 13th near Oyler Street, where they found a man on the sidewalk with at least one fatal gunshot wound to the head. His body was in front of a barber shop, which is next to a convenience store and across the street from the Hoverter Homes community.
Lots of passersby and neighbors were outside at the time of the daylight shooting, police said.
The victim was about 25 years old, authorities said. They declined to release his name Wednesday, pending notification of relatives.
Police did not release any details about the circumstances that lead to the shooting.
Police Commissioner Thomas Carter lamented the uptick in violence in the city so far this year and particularly out south, where things had been relatively quiet last year.
“We’re trying to do what we can do to maintain public safety,” Carter said. “But we need the community’s help because it’s getting out of hand.”

The city recorded 14 homicides last year and 14 homicides in 2018.
