Forecasters: Midwest front to bring more hard rain to Middle Tennessee - Tennessean

More hard rain is expected to hit Middle Tennessee this week as National Weather Service forecasters say a front from the Midwest moves south.

Starting Thursday, localized flooding could be a concern, said Sam Herron, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for parts of the Caribbean and Puerto Rico as a storm system expected to become Tropical Storm Isaias could eventually reach Florida by this weekend, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center named the system "Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine" on Tuesday.

"A lot of the moisture we're getting in our area is connected with the Gulf of Mexico but that pattern isn't the main focus for us," Herron said Wednesday. "For us the rain is primarily a weak cold front that's going to be coming down on us and stall out in our area for the next few days."

Some of the moisture coming up from the Gulf will interact with the stalled front and that's going to produce the on-and-off showers and thunderstorms, Herron said.

Expect the heaviest rain Thursday through Saturday, he said.

Wednesday's forecast in the greater Nashville area calls for a 40% chance of rain, mainly during the afternoon hours, the NWS in Nashville reports. A high of 93 degrees is expected.

Thursday calls for a 90% chance of storms and a high of 86.

The week will continue to be humid with storms, but forecasters say the temperatures aren't expected to be as high as they've been in recent days.

"Unfortunately, the main reason we will see some relief from the heat is because of t'storms through the much of the day," the NWS in Nashville tweeted Wednesday.

A weak cold front will help drop temperatures from the 90s to the high 80s throughout the remainder of the week.

The rain is expected to continue Friday with an 80% chance expected and a high of 88.

An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected by Saturday evening with a 60 percent chance of rain expected.

Sunday and Monday are calling for a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms, the NWS said.

Forecasters are reminding people never to drive through high water. Turn around, they say, don't drown.
