Just days after Alcoa City Schools began slowly welcoming students back to class during the coronavirus pandemic, an individual has tested positive for the virus.
The school system announced Friday night that an individual at Alcoa Middle School has tested positive for COVID-19 and contact tracing has been completed.
"Anyone who has been in close contact with this person will be notified by phone messaging system and email within the next 24 hours," wrote director Rebecca Stone.
If notified, the student will need to quarantine for 14 days unless a doctor's note or negative test shows it's possible to return sooner. Students are expected to continue working digitally, but are not permitted to attend school or any school activities.
If you do not receive a call or email in the next 24 hours, the announcement said, this means your child was not in direct contact with the individual.
As of Friday, there were 728 cases of COVID-19 in Blount County, according to the state health department.
How Alcoa's reopening plan works
Alcoa schools began welcoming students back Wednesday while operating on a staggered, hybrid schedule to prevent the increasing spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Students were broken up into five groups, according to last name, and would be in the classroom one day a week. Only a fifth of the students would be on campus at a given time.
When students aren't in the classroom, they are expected to submit their work through Google Classroom and use their district-issued Chromebooks.
The district plan said it plans to keep the hybrid model until at least Labor Day. The district offered a fully virtual learning option as well.
