The Tennessee Titans made some additions to their front office on Thursday, including Nashville native Adolpho Birch III as the team’s new senior vice president of business affairs and chief legal officer.
Surf Melendez was also hired as creative director and Dan Werly was tabbed as the franchise's general counsel.
Birch III, a Father Ryan and Vanderbilt grad, spent 24 years with the NFL, most recently serving as senior VP of league affairs. Working at the league office, he was a key figure in developing policies on personal conduct, player and employee development, drugs and labor negotiations. He will oversee the Titans' legal and human resources work and act as a state and local government liaison.
The son of A.A. Birch Jr., the first African-American chief justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court, Birch III has a law degree from Vanderbilt and was elected to the school’s board of trust in 2014. He is widely considered by many around the league to be a big get for the Titans front office.
Melendez spent the last six years with the Miami Dolphins. He helped spearhead creative policies for the Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium, serving as managing director for content and creative. He also spent three years as the senior brand design manager and creative director at adidas. With the Titans, Melendez will oversee creative content such as gameday operations and broadcast relations.
Werly is no stranger to Nashville himself after spending last year as the general counsel for Nashville SC. He graduated from Georgetown Law School and was a managing partner for Sievert & Werly, where he worked in sports law.
“It is a tremendous honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Adolpho (Birch III) and [Surf Melendez],” Werly tweeted. “[I’m] looking forward to many big things to come. #TitanUp.”
