The Syracuse Middle Eastern Festival, which annually draws more than 12,000 people to St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church, is moving to curbside takeout this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The festival was started over 90 years ago as a picnic and doubles as a celebration of St. Elias’ feast day. While the music and dancing are postponed until next year, the food will go on.
Syracuse Middle Eastern Fest announced on their Facebook page that they would be offering a limited menu for curbside pickup on July 10 and 11. While more details are coming soon, they said they will be offering their most popular menu items.
In 2019 the festival offered new items on their “Mezza Menu” each night over the four days of the festival. They joined festival favorites like shawarma, gyros, spinach pie, kibbe, grape leaves and more. And don’t forget the desserts like zalaby, crispy fried dough balls dipped in syrup, baklava and pistachio ma’amoul a la mode.
At the end of April, organizers announced that this year’s festival would be canceled due to concerns around the Covid-19 pandemic. They will still be holding their dream vacation raffle on July 12 and are selling raffle tickets for $50. Festival season in Syracuse is looking different this year. This weekend the annual Taste of Syracuse is moving to an online event and the Syracuse Greek Festival that was originally scheduled for the following weekend is now postponed to August.
Central New York is currently in phase two of a four phase reopening plan after the state shutdown to help flatten the curve of the coronavirus pandemic. Festivals like these are part of phase four which has no definite time frame of when they will be allowed as of yet.
