CLARK, NJ – Science got a little more real for students learning from a distance recently. Carl H. Kumpf seventh grade students have been enjoying a serie of “In Real Life Science” Days as part of their virtual classes on Google Meet.
Danielle Bihuniak along with her colleagues Annemarie Lamberti and MaryJean Veiksans recently started IRLS to give students a chance to interview a person who works or studies in a field related to science each week.
School officials said in addition to keeping students connected with their classroom community, this activity teaches students about the many careers related to science.
The first interview of the series was with Dr. Jessica D. Bihuniak PhD, RD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Nutrition from the Department of Nutrition & Food Studies at New York University (NYU). Their most recent interview session was with three members of the Army Corps of Engineers.
Questions included what a typical day looks like, what qualifications are needed for the job as well as where those qualifications were obtained. Students also asked about their favorite/least favorite part of the job and what the impact of their job is on the community at large.
Future interviews will include participants such as physical therapist and Clark resident, Dr. Kathleen Carapola PT, DPT, and Frank McQuarrie, a PhD student working in the field of Ocean Engineering.
“I think it is important students are shown that a career in science does not just mean becoming a person in a lab coat locked up in a laboratory full of chemicals. Meeting those working within various facets of the science industries opens the student’s eyes to a variety of career opportunities they may otherwise not be aware of,” said Bihuniak.
She continued, “ It has also been beneficial for the middle school students to hear from successful professionals that it is okay to not have a picture perfect idea of what their future profession will be at this age. Instead students are being encouraged to look at the career opportunities and areas of study available as a means to foster exploration of new learning opportunities and career paths in the hopes of illustrating that the sky truly is the limit to what they can achieve if they set their minds to it.”
