Middle Tennessee could see round two of severe weather, including 75 mph winds - Tennessean

Another round of severe storms is expected to make its way through the Midstate Monday evening and could possibly spin up a tornado, the National Weather Service is reporting.

NWS Nashville issued a thunderstorm watch until midnight for 24 counties in Middle Tennessee, including Davidson, Cheatham, Dickson, Hickman, Houston,  Maury, Rutherford, Wilson and Williamson counties.

Worst of storms to travel south

According to NWS Nashville meteorologist Mark Rose, the storm "just crossed over into Middle Tennessee" as of 7 p.m. Monday.

"We will get some rain, but the worst of the storms will go south of Nashville, or south of Interstate 40. The main threats for those southern counties are straight line winds, large hail and isolated flash flooding."

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued by the NWS for Perry and Wayne counties until 8:15 p.m. Wind gusts up to 60 mph was predicted and golf ball-sized hail was reported in Lutts in Wayne County.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning with 1.25-sized hail expected is in effect for Maury County until 9:30 p.m.

A tornado can't be ruled out, according to an earlier report by NWS.

Storms could last into early Tuesday, said Brendan Schaper, a meteorologist with the NWS in Nashville.

Storms are expected to roll in from Oklahoma and eastern portions of Kansas then into the Ozarks and Tennessee, potentially bringing strong winds up to 75 mph, large hail and isolated flash flooding, Schaper said.

"The worst expected is damaging straight-line winds, hail and a spin of a tornado," Schaper said. "There's still some uncertainty as to the location it's going to track through, but right now the highest probability (locally) could be from the Tennessee River to Clarksville and over to the I-65 corridor."

As of 8:30 a.m., the temperature at the Nashville International Airport registered at 65 degrees.

Before the anticipated bad weather, temperatures were expected to climb close to 80 degrees, Schaper said.

"We'll have plenty of sunshine, which will be fuel for the storms later this afternoon," he said.

Whether it's through phone or other means, Schaper said people need to make sure they have multiple ways to receive weather warning information this afternoon.

Expect more showers and thunderstorms Monday night mainly after 11 p.m. A quarter to a half of an inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms are expected to again return before 2 p.m.

A high near 78 and mostly cloudy skies are also in the forecast.

A 20 percent chance of showers are expected Wednesday after 1 p.m. along with mostly sunny skies throughout the day with a high near 65 and overnight low of 44.

More than 83,000 still without power

The severe weather expected Monday afternoon comes after Middle Tennessee residents experienced a powerful Sunday afternoon storm that downed power lines, uprooted trees and left more than 100,000 people without power.

Despite extensive damage across the region, meteorologist said Monday they do not believe a tornado touched down.

"Right now we're not planning on surveying for tornado damage," Schaper said.

At least one person -— a firefighter, died in Maury County as a result of the storm, officials there reported.

In Davidson County, nearly 130,000 Nashville Electric Service customers lost power Sunday, which NES officials reported as being one of their largest outages on record.

Just after noon Monday, more than 87,000 NES and Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation customer's remained without power.

This is a developing story.
