There's no doubt that it's tough to choose a baby name. Your parents dislike millennial baby names (and they'll let you know about it), your friends might have beaten you to your favorite names, you have to worry about having baby-name regret, and you have to choose a name a person will carry with them for the rest of their lives without ever meeting them first. It's a lot of responsibility.
For middle names, though, the pressure is mostly off. An adult can choose to use a middle name or not, so you're not saddling your future kid with a label they'll need to hear every day for the rest of their lives. That gives you leeway to be a little bit more creative. You can choose a trendier name, or unique name, and not have to worry that it's too far out-of-the-box. These middle names for boys are all currently increasing in popularity, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA), which keeps track of baby names. Use them as inspiration, and ensure that your son will have a strong middle to go with their first. (And if you're looking for middle names for girls or gender-neutral names, we have those, too.)

Find an old-fashioned name
It's right on trend: Not only are "old man" names rising in popularity as the top boys' baby names, so are old-timey nicknames as first or middle names. Need proof? There's one famous baby that embodies both of these trends: Archie (not Archibald) Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. As with all things, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ahead of the curve. So if you didn't want to honor a grandpa or great-grandpa with your baby's first name, these family names might be great inspiration for a middle name. Some more old-fashioned names for boys:
Ace
August
Clyde
Gus
Hank
Hugh
Jude
Louis
Sonny
Theo
Or go with a last name.
If you don't want to go full junior with your boy's middle name, you can still celebrate your family's history by repurposing a last name as a first name. Surnames are gaining popularity as first and middle names. And, if you want to borrow from someone else's family, here's some last-name-as-middle-name inspiration:
Beckham
Cooper
Ellis
Emerson
Fletcher
Harrison (there's Archie's influence again)
Hendrix

Look abroad.
The biggest baby-naming trend for boys is choosing an international twist on a name — picking Luca over the more-popular Luke, for example. You can pick up these names by looking around the world:
Anders
Bjorn
Declan
Emiliano
Gael
Gunnar
Kai
Niko
Santiago
Zaid
Choose an up-and-coming name.
You may be afraid to pick a trendy name as a first name, for fear that it'll become too popular, but a middle name gives you a chance to choose a name that's of-the-moment. The SSA has identified names that are increasing in popularity, and there are some creative options on the list. (You can see more examples of some of the other trends here, along with one we haven't mentioned yet — places as names.)
