Three juveniles were taken into custody Monday morning, April 20, for allegedly breaking into Central Middle School, East Grand Forks Police Chief Mike Hedlund said.
Police responded to an alarm at the school around 1:50 a.m. and found the three juveniles exiting the building. Upon seeing officers, the juveniles got into a car and drove away, Hedlund said. Responding officers conducted a traffic stop on Bygland Road near the school and took the three juveniles into custody. The juveniles, all 17 years old, were released Monday morning to their parents.
Hedlund said they allegedly entered the building through a roof hatch and took five cases of soda and Powerade from a store inside the school. No other damage or stolen items were found, he said.
The Polk County State's Attorney Office will determine what charges will be pressed against the juveniles and whether they will be tried as adults.
Hedlund said the alleged burglary comes amid a drop in reports of suspicious activity, a trend which he hopes will continue. However, after weeks of fewer calls for service during Minnesota's lockdown, this weekend saw a jump in calls to near-normal levels. Hedlund said he suspects a combination of warmer weather and residents tiring of staying inside could be to blame.
"This was a busy weekend for this COVID-19 time period, but certainly wouldn't have been anything out of the ordinary for a normal weekend," Hedlund said.
