Our president’s ego and sense of ethical propriety know no bounds.

In an unprecedented decision, his name, “President Donald J. Trump,” will appear on the $1,200 paper stimulus checks the IRS is scheduled to soon start sending to 70 million Americans, the Washington Post reports.

The paper checks will go to people for whom the IRS doesn’t have bank information for direct deposit. Senior IRS officials told the Post that computer reprogramming to accommodate the addition of Trump’s name will delay the issuance of the checks. Treasury officials dispute that.

The president cannot legally sign the checks; that’s left to a civil servant to ensure federal government expenditures are nonpartisan. So, instead, the president’s name will appear in the memo area of the check.

The decision to print the president’s name on the checks was made by the Treasury Department after Trump suggested the idea to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, The New York Times reports.

Sadly, after three years of the Trump presidency, this doesn’t surprise us. Even in the middle of a pandemic, it’s all about him.
