A local school has surpassed its previous national ranking.
Grand Rapids-based City High Middle School ranked No. 1 in the state of Michigan and No. 21 out of 17,700 schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
That is an increase from last year when U.S. News and World Report ranked City High Middle School No. 2 in Michigan and No. 38 in the country.
“City High Middle School has consistently received recognition as one of the top schools in Michigan,” said Ronald Gorman, interim superintendent for Grand Rapids Public Schools. “This year, they can proudly say they are the top school in Michigan. I want to congratulate the students and staff on this great accomplishment.”
City High Middle School was the first school in the area to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma Programme. The IB participation rate at City High Middle School is 100%, total minority enrollment is 53% and 44% of students are economically disadvantaged.
“This achievement means the world to our students, families, staff and community,” said Ryan Huppert, City High Middle School principal. “To have such a diverse learning community ranked at the very top of the state is an amazing honor and highlights the great things happening here and in GRPS. We couldn’t be more proud.”
