Fairview Park’s Lewis F. Mayer Middle School students visited by ‘Energy Agents’ - cleveland.com

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- Lewis F. Mayer Middle School students were recently visited by “Energy Agents.” The funny duo featuring National Theatre for Children actors taught the sixth, seventh and eighth graders about renewable resources and energy conservation.

“It’s a 40-minute play performed by two professional actors doing a series of improv comedy sketches,” Lewis F. Mayer Middle School sixth grade teacher Kristen Conner, who is also a science department head.

“The purpose is to teach students how to do their part in conserving energy.”

Topics covered during the visit included renewable and non-renewable resources, how resources are used to create energy and electricity, the difference between energy and electricity, the difference between energy conservation and energy efficiency and things students can do at home right now to help save energy.

Conner is hoping the students learned about the importance of saving energy in their homes, including turning off unneeded lights and switching light bulbs to LEDs.

“It definitely had a message, but they also tried to incorporate a lot of humor into it,” Conner said. “The actors would go behind a curtain and change into a different mask or glasses with a funny nose and mustache. They had different outfits for each of the skits.”

Each student received a free energy kit, which included LED light bulbs, an advanced power saving outlet strip, LED night lights and a furnace whistle. The entire event was sponsored by First Energy.

Sixth grader Lauren Eberly said she was honored for Lewis F. Mayer Middle School to be a part of the worldwide effort to conserve energy. Classmate Mitchell Cleary said he was proud to bring the kit home, which his parents put to good use right away.

“My favorite part of the assembly was when they were pretending to read my fake diary to the crowd while acting appalled over every entry,” said sixth grader Olivia Ruffner, who was called on stage to participate.

“I also learned so much about energy saving, including the difference between natural and renewable energies, and the many benefits of renewable energy.”

Added sixth grader Alexa Prifti, “The actors were hilarious. I hope they can come do more skits in the future.”
