Area police respond to threats against Sioux Falls, Tea middle schools over the weekend - Argus Leader

The Sioux Falls and Tea Area school districts are starting the week with a heightened sense of awareness after two separate threats were made over the weekend on social media to area middle schools, school officials said Monday.

The Sioux Falls School District was made aware of a threat Sunday evening against Edison Middle School. It was determined there was no credibility to the threat, district officials said Monday.

Tea Superintendent Jennifer Lowery said the social media threat against Tea Area Middle School happened Saturday. Operations will continue as normal in Tea, school officials said.

Edison Middle School was expected to start Monday with extra school resource officers on the campus to answer any questions students and parents may have.

"We have been working with the Sioux Falls Police Department and national law enforcement since that time," Sioux Falls School District spokeswoman Carly Uthe said Monday. "They tell us there is 'no known credibility to the threat.' We have not been made aware of other districts receiving the same threat. Additionally, we have not been made aware of any arrests either."

The Sioux Falls police spokesman Sam Clemens confirmed the threat made against Edison, but said it did not seem credible. No arrests have been made, he said.

Sioux Falls school officials sent a message to Edison parents and staff Sunday night about the incident.

"Earlier this evening, we were made aware of a threat through social media. We thank our alert students and concerned adults as you have each done what is recommended - see something, say something," part of the message read.

The Tea school district alerted middle school parents Sunday, after working with the Tea Police Department to investigate the matter, Lowery said. The situation wasn't an emergency, but Lowery said as with any possible threat, she considers it to be of "high alert to be reviewed with the utmost scrutiny."

"I consider every threat to have credibility to it," Lowery said. "We review and take the exact same procedures and precautions about anything we receive."

Lowery said she doesn't believe the two incidents are connected. And while she wouldn't outright say whether anyone had been detained or arrested, Lowery said the Tea Police Department handled the situation, calling the agency a "wonderful partner to the school and the community."

"We work with juveniles, so I have to be careful with what I provide," Lowery said. "I do know that law enforcement has taken care of it."

The Tea Area Middle School has a resource officer on campus. Lowery said she saw no reason to have additional security on the campus Monday.
