Marlowe Middle School student dies Monday, according to school district - Northwest Herald

A Marlowe Middle School student died unexpectedly Monday, Huntley School District 158 announced Tuesday.

James “Jimmy” Kilanski was in the seventh grade, Marlowe Principal Tony Venetico said in a letter posted on the school’s website.

“We are all grieving this tragic loss and offer our deepest condolences to the Kilanski family, his many friends, his classmates, the teachers and staff members that learned alongside him, and to all who knew Jimmy,” Venetico said. “This loss has left us heartbroken, and our school community will struggle to process this news for some time.”

Venetico said social workers will be present all day in the class of Kilanski’s teacher, Mrs. Stewart.

Social work, counseling and administrative staff will be available to provide support to any student or staff member in need of support, he said. According to Marlowe’s Facebook page, comfort dogs from Lutheran Church Charities were at the school Tuesday.

A moment of silence to remember Kilanski also is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

“Students and staff members are encouraged to reach out to any staff member they are comfortable with if they feel a need to express their feelings or ask any questions,” Venetico said. “If your child is struggling to process this information, we also encourage families to contact the school to be put in touch with resources that can help. “

Information about services and school remembrances for Jimmy will be shared as they are available, he said.

A GoFundMe account to raise money for funeral services has been set up.

“Jimmy was an energetic, thoughtful, kind, friendly, caring, and loving 13-year-old boy,” according to the GoFundMe page, who enjoyed “big hugs, playing Fortnite, playing with Legos, spending time with his family and friends, riding his scooter, Scouting, watching ‘Star Wars’ and [‘Doctor] Who,’ and many other activities.”

“Jimmy had a big heart, an amazing spirit, a contagious smile, and wanted to be everyone’s friend,” according to the GoFundMe. “He was a wonderful big brother to his sister, Xanie, and his brother, Zach. And a loving son to Jim and Jessica.”

According to the GoFundMe, Jimmy was a Boy Scout with Troop 267 as part of the Phoenix Patrol, and he had had just earned his Tenderfoot rank and was on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, like his dad.

“His former Den Leader has said that Jimmy embodied Scout spirit, was always ready to lend a hand, curious about the world around him, and always proud when he earned an achievement,” according to the page. “We will truly miss him at our Den, Pack and Troop meetings.”
