MACOMB — During Monday’s school board meeting, the Macomb Board of Education voted to issue the general obligation school bonds that will be used as part of the construction of the new middle school.
Macomb superintendent Patrick M. Twomey said during the school board meeting that $9.5 million of bonds have been sold and will be paid back with the McDonough County one-cent sales tax used for countywide school projects. He also said due to state politics, that he chose a local grant writer to write out the capital project grant for the district.
Twomey said during the meeting that during the early days of the middle school design project, a Chicago-based architect had created a $35 million middle school design. Twomey turned it down, saying he knows that Macomb does not need a $35 million middle school and Macomb residents will not support a middle school with a high price tag. He said the Quincy-based architect he chose instead was able to get the middle school design to fit both the needs and the budget of the school district.
Macomb Jr. High social studies teacher Jose Galvan gave the school board a proposal of how middle school students can improve their social and emotional development. He said if a student needs to contact a teacher or a staff member, instead of talking face to face, they can send an email to that adult. He also mentioned that students that need additional social and emotional development, that student would have additional one-on-one time with the guidance counselor.
Macomb High School principal Scott Sullivan presented to the school board how the high school prepares students for the SAT. He said that students are required to take the SAT 9, SAT 10 and the SAT in the spring during that respective grade. He said that the PSAT, which is taken in the fall, is not required for juniors to take due to it being connected to the National Merit Foundation Scholarship.
Sullivan also told the school board that both the English and math teachers received information on what the most missed questions were so they will be able to adjust their lesson plans accordingly. He said that both he and the math teachers were surprised that the most math problems missed on the SAT were the algebra I questions. School board vice president Scott Torrance and board member Jim LaPrad believed that the reason why 44 percent of algebra I questions were missed was because seniors tend to think more about advanced math, not algebra I.
In other business, the school board voted to approve to start the process of creating the 2020-2021 school year budget and the comprehensive annual financial report for the 2018-2019 school year. The school board also voted to approve the Science Club trip to Southern Illinois University Carbondale for the Illinois Junior High Sciences and Humanities Symposium on March 19-21.
The next school board meeting will be on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Macomb Jr/Sr High School C.T. Vivian Library.
