Israeli PM Says Possible Corruption Charges Against Him Will Produce 'Nothing'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on nationwide television Tuesday that any police recommendations to indict him on corruption charges "will end with nothing."

"I will continue to lead Israel responsibly and faithfully," he said.

The prime minister's comments came after Israeli news outlets reported that police, after completing a monthslong investigation into two cases, were recommending Netanyahu be indicted on corruption charges.

The country's attorney general has to decide whether to file charges.

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked has said formal charges against a prime minister do not require him to resign, but they could trigger calls for him to step down.

Netanyahu is being accused of receiving gifts from wealthy benefactors in return for promoting their interests. One benefactor is Israeli-born Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan, who allegedly gave Netanyahu tens of thousands of dollars in gifts, such as expensive cigars and champagne. Netanyahu also reportedly received gifts from Australian billionaire James Packer and other wealthy supporters.

Additionally, police investigated a suspected illegal agreement between the prime minister and newspaper publisher Arnon Mozes to provide Netanyahu with favorable news coverage at the expense of a rival publication.

Police questioned Netanyahu about the allegations last month. He repeatedly has denied any wrongdoing.
