Israel says it shot down an Iranian drone that was launched from Syria after it entered Israeli territory late Friday.
In response, Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Jonathan Conricus said Israel aimed an attack on Iranian targets in Syria. Conricus said Iran was “responsible for this severe violation of Israeli sovereignty.”
An Israeli F-16 fighter jet, however, was downed Saturday by the Syrian Army with anti-aircraft fire.
The Israeli pilots were able to eject successfully from their jet, the IDF said.
“Iran is dragging the region into a situation in which it doesn’t know how it will end, “ IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Ronen Manelis said. “We are prepared for a variety of incidents ... whoever is responsible for this incident is the one who will pay the price.”
The Syrian attack resulted in air raid sirens being activated in the Golan Heights and Beit She’an, but no casualties were reported.
“The IDF will continue to operate against attempts to infiltrate Israeli airspace and will act with determination to prevent any violations of Israel’s sovereignty,” an IDF spokesperson said Saturday.
