A U.S. Navy ship patrolling in the Persian Gulf fired a warning shot at an Iranian Revolutionary Guard ship after it got too close to the U.S. vessel, according to American defense officials.
The officials said the U.S. ship fired on the Iranian vessel after it came within 137 meters of the U.S. ship at a high rate of speed.
“[The Iranian ship] did not respond to any signals, they did not respond to any bridge-to-bridge calls, they felt there was no choice except to fire the warning shots," a U.S. official told AFP.
The U.S. ship involved was a Cyclone-class patrol ship engaged in an exercise with other American vessels in the Gulf.
