Saudi police have arrested a young woman featured in viral videos wearing miniskirt while touring historic sites in violation of the country's strict dress code, state media reported Tuesday.
Al-Ekhbariya station said the woman, who allegedly walked through a fort in Ushaiqer in a short skirt and crop top, was arrested for wearing "suggestive clothing."
A series of short videos of the woman playing in the sand were posted over the weekend by the Snapchat account "Model Khulood".
The video uploaded over the weekend was widely shared on Twitter and Youtube, drawing both praise for the woman's bravery and criticism for her violation of Saudi dress code, which mandates that women wear a black "abaya" that covers everything except the face, feet, and hands.
Responding to calls for the woman's arrest, the morality police wrote on their official Twitter account that it had “intercepted a clip of a girl in inappropriate clothing” and had opened an investigation with the “relevant authorities.”
But the debate over the weekend exposed conflicting views on Saudi Arabia's strict rules for women. In addition to the specific dress code, women are not allowed to drive or socialize with men who are not related to them.
Supporters of "Khulood" noted that many foreigners did not cover their heads while visiting the country.
A screenshot of the video with Ivanka Trump's face and the caption “Enough already, the situation has been solved" was among the images widely shared.
