A reader just asked me for a dashcam recommendation (yes, Virginia, I really do read your emails), and it made me realize I haven't shared a deal on one in quite a while.

That's partly because I don't drive much, so it's not a top-of-mind product. It's also because I despise cord clutter, and most dashcams require at least one visible, dangly cord. There are ways around that, though (see below), so let's proceed to the matter at hand: For a limited time, and while supplies last, the ApeMan C420D Dash Cam is on sale for $48, the second-lowest it's ever been.

This is a small, fairly basic dashcam that performs most of the key functions you'd want. It suctions to your windshield and records 1080p video, day and night. (You'll need a microSD card to store those recordings; here's a 32GB SanDisk card for just $8.35 if you don't have one.) It offers motion detection, collision detection and loop recording.

You also get a wired rear camera, effectively giving you close to 360 degrees of total coverage. (Each camera has a 170-degree field of view.) Note, however, that it tops out at 720p resolution, which might not be enough to, say, capture a license plate.

Plus, it's yet another wire to contend with. You can route it through trim, under carpet and so on, but obviously this takes a little doing. As for the dashcam itself, one option is something like these inexpensive cable clips ($10 for 40), which would let you run the cords along the edge of the windshield without having to mess with trim.

If you don't think you need or want the rear camera, consider the ApeMan C450, which has a larger screen and sells for $45 (minus a 5% on-page coupon).

Myanmar medics in anti-coup front line as dissent spreads - Yahoo Finance

Feb 2 (Reuters) - "Dictatorship must fail," read the writing on the back of one Myanmar doctor's hazmat suit in a statement of defiance against Monday's military coup.

Other medics in at least 20 government hospitals rallied to a campaign of civil disobedience against the generals who overthrew elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday and cut short a tentative transition to democracy.

Doctors threatened to stop work even with coronavirus infections still rising steadily in the country of 54 million.

"We cannot accept dictators and an unelected government," Myo Thet Oo, a doctor participating in the campaign, told Reuters from the northeastern town of Lashio.

"They can arrest us anytime. We have decided to face it... All of us have decided not to go to the hospital."

Reuters was unable to contact Myanmar's new army government for comment on the doctors' boycott and the broader signs of spreading dissent.

Anger against the military surged on social media, with a swathe of Facebook users in a country where it is the main platform changing profile pictures to portraits of Suu Kyi or the red colour of her National League for Democracy party.

In the main city of Yangon, people banged pans and sounded car horns after dark in protest.

One of Myanmar's biggest youth groups and its federation of student unions called for civil disobedience campaigns along with the doctors from across the country - including a 1,000-bed hospital in the capital Naypyidaw.

"That is inspiring," activist Thinzar Shunlei Yi told Reuters of the civil disobedience campaign, whose new Facebook page already had more than 112,000 likes.

The military also had its supporters, winning backing from the Young Men's Buddhist Association in the Buddhist majority country. Hundreds of people rallied in the centre of the main city, Yangon, to support coup leader Min Aung Hlaing.

ARMY SUPPORTERS

While the anti-coup doctors voiced dissent, supporters of the army on social media posted an old picture showing the uniformed Myanmar Military Medical Corps COVID-19 response team holding up a banner that said "We Are Ready".

"We would rather die, than get treatment from the military," some people posted in response.

Min Aung Hlaing set fighting the coronavirus as his main priority alongside holding elections on Tuesday. It has killed over 3,100 people from more than 140,000 infections, one of the highest tolls in Southeast Asia.

The pandemic has brought even greater respect for doctors working in one of the world's weakest health systems.

It is not the first time they have emerged in a challenge against the military. In 2015, they mounted a Black Ribbon campaign against the militarization of health ministry and other medical appointments.

Some doctors revived that campaign on Tuesday alongside the boycott.

"We are well connected to each other in our medical network. We expect to connect and spread the campaign nationwide," said Sai Nay Myo, a former assistant hospital director, of the civil disobedience campaign. "We cannot accept dictatorship." In a letter that anticipated her detention and was published by an aide on Monday, Suu Kyi had called on people to protest against a coup - though she did not specify that they should take to the streets.

Pro-democracy supporters showed anger in many ways - including a slew of insults to a Facebook post by the new information minister thanking people for their best wishes.

Some announced boycotts of beer and other products from companies with links to the army's extensive business holdings.

"We will only accept the government that was elected and wholeheartedly supported by the people," said the Grill and Chill Restaurant in the main city Yangon, one of several to join the campaign.

And in an echo of months of anti-government protests in Thailand, two senior members of Suu Kyi's NLD posted pictures of themselves giving the three-finger salute of opposition to army rule that was inspired by "The Hunger Games". (Writing by Matthew Tostevin; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

Lawsuit alleges Millbrae middle school teacher sexually abused students - Pacifica Tribune

MILLBRAE – The Millbrae Elementary School District employed a teacher who allegedly sexually abused and harassed at least two female students and then failed to take appropriate action when the claims came to light, according to a lawsuit filed in San Mateo County.

The 24-page complaint for personal injuries and damages alleges former Spanish and math teacher Ethel Molina groomed the seventh-grade students at Taylor Middle School “with the intent of manipulating their emotions and taking advantage of their young age so that she could ultimately sexually abuse them” during the 2013-14 school year.

Molina allegedly groped and inappropriately touched the students during and after class, according to the suit. She also allegedly sexually harassed the students by repeatedly making comments about the way they looked and complimented their bodies.

Toward the end of the school year, the students along with three or four others reported the abuse to administrators, according to the suit. The students said they did not witness any administrator contact police and they were not contacted by police.

In addition, the lawsuit alleges administrators gave students the choice of either reporting the abuse to their parents or leaving it to administrators to deliver the news. Only one of the students chose the second option. Administrators “vaguely told” her parents what had happened, but guaranteed them they would “handle the reports appropriately.”

“This assertion was false,” the suit states. “Defendants and the school did nothing.”

The school district “negligently failed to monitor and supervise” Molina and “negligently failed to adequately implement or enforce any district-wide procedures or policies aimed at preventing, detecting or deterring the sexual harassment or abuse of students by teachers,” according to the suit.

The lawsuit also alleges the district did not report the abuse to police as required by law.

In a statement, Millbrae Elementary School District Superintendent Debra French said the district had not yet been served with the lawsuit and could not comment on pending litigation. The suit was filed Monday and names the district and school as defendants.

“When served we will promptly investigate any and all allegations which suggest student safety has been compromised,” French said. “With that said, Millbrae Elementary School District is deeply committed to fostering positive learning environments, preparing our students for success and ensuring the safety, security and well-being of all students entrusted to our care. We do not tolerate any behavior that undermines those values.”

The suit seeks damages for past and future medical, psychotherapy and related expenses, as well as general damages for physical and mental pain and suffering and emotional distress.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said a criminal case was never presented to prosecutors.

“We might still be within the statute” of limitations, Wagstaffe said. “We may give a call to see what’s going on.”

The lawsuit comes roughly three years after a judge sentenced former Taylor Middle School teacher Heather Butts to four months in jail for having a sexual relationship with a former student. The two were spotted kissing inside a van in August 2016 and an investigation revealed earlier sexual conduct between them in October 2015. Butts ultimately pleaded no contest to one felony count of lewd acts with a 15-year-old.

Nonbinary Georgia middle schooler struck by classmate in bathroom, mother says - WJXT News4JAX

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – The mother of a Georgia middle school student is speaking out, saying her child has been repeatedly bullied on school grounds.

Morgaine Blanchard is an 11-year-old who attends Camden County Middle School.

“My child identifies as nonbinary. And as a family, we’ve chosen to allow them to express themselves however they’d like,” Rowena Cason, the child’s mother, told News4Jax.

Cason said school staff has misgendered her child, who identifies using the pronouns “they” and “them.” Cason said not only has staff at the school refused to call Morgaine by the student’s preferred pronouns, but that on Monday, a classmate physically assaulted Morgaine.

“It was a bathroom break,” Morgaine said. “I just got finished washing my hands. I turned my back to the trash can to put the trash into the trash can, this girl came up and whacked me in the back of the head.”

Morgaine then went to the nurse’s office.

“I started to tell her all the symptoms. I started to feel nauseous, dizzy, my vision started getting worse,” Morgaine said.

Cason told News4Jax that the school waited an hour before calling EMS to take Morgaine to the hospital. She said she was out of town and that she contacted a family friend to meet Morgaine at the hospital.

“They have a suspected concussion. They have a lot of swelling on the back of their skull,” Cason said.

Haley Webb, Cason’s close friend, said she tried to file a police report at the hospital but that the police did not meet Morgaine at the hospital.

“They did attempt to contact the police in regards to filing charges, and the police failed to come to the hospital saying the resource officer was taking care of it,” Webb said.

Webb said the resource officer at Camden County Middle School won’t speak with her or Cason. She said she still doesn’t know if the school has taken any action toward the student who injured Morgaine.

Camden County Schools released a statement that reads:

“Out of respect for student privacy, Camden County Schools does not publicly offer comment on any student-specific questions or concerns. Camden County Schools is committed to meeting the diverse needs of our 9,000 students in a safe, equitable, and nurturing learning environment. We work daily to create an educational community where our students, employees, and visitors feel welcome, valued, and respected.”

Webb said Morgaine does not feel safe and will not be returning to school in-person.

Webb said she and the child’s mother are working with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office to file a report.
