COVID disagreements front and center at TUSD special meeting - The Turlock Journal

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

The Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution to set social distance expectations for when students are attending board meetings in official capacity. The resolution passed with a 4-1 vote, with Trustee Kenneth Howenstein voting no and Jeffery Cortinas abstaining.

The meeting comes on the heels of last week's board meeting where the two student representatives were forced to leave because Cortinas and other adults refused to wear a mask in the meeting room. Cortinas claimed at the meeting that he put in a request for a medical exemption and was not formally denied. Assistant Superintendent Barney Gordon said he was not aware of that request and will follow up.

While Stanislaus County ended the indoor mask mandate earlier this month, masks are still required in school settings when students are present, according to state guidelines.

The resolution encourages student involvement at the board meetings while stating that all parties will follow the requirements of Cal/OSHA, the Public Health Officer and the California Department of Public Health. If board meetings don’t follow the mandates, the district would be fined around $13,000.

The district's COVID safety plan follows CDPH guidelines that require adults to wear masks indoors when children are present.

“Tonight we are here to reiterate that board meetings are considered school settings when students are present in official capacity or invitation,” said Gordon. “This is the result of confusion and difficulty over the last few meetings which has garnered concern from community members, staff and board members.”

During the public comment section there was a mix of support and opposition to the measure. The ones who supported the measure said they appreciated students being considered above all else.

“I was so disappointed that the students had to suffer because of recalcitrant adults and one school board member,” said Donna Endsley. “I was so shocked that adults would refuse to comply and put their own wants above the health, growth and wants of children.”

The ones who opposed the resolution felt everyone should have the choice whether to wear a mask.

“You’re starting to frustrate people who kept quiet all these years and we’re getting fed up with the policies,” said Nathanial Rhodes. “Give people their choice back and let the kids choose and the adults choose. If people want to wear a mask, I respect them, and if people don’t want to, you should respect them as well.”

The resolution was to set expectations for board meetings when students are present and currently there are no guidelines for how to respond when someone doesn’t follow the requirements.

“As the resolution passed with a majority vote of the board, our expectation is that all will respect the will of the board and follow suit, as board bylaws require. Should this not occur, the board may choose to alter the way in which board meetings are conducted,” said TUSD communications coordinator Marie Russell.

Gordon and others during public comment suggested that those wishing not to wear a mask can submit their comment beforehand or attend the meeting in the overflow room down the hall. This prompted Cortinas and members of the audience to claim that would be a form of segregation. Other members of the board disagreed with that characterization.

“To use the term segregation is very troubling for me. That’s not what it is, we are doing our best to keep the schools open,” said board member Mary Jackson. “I don’t want to make anything political, if you don’t want to wear a mask go into another room. We want to set an example for our students.”

Cortinas said he believes this resolution should not lead to community members being forced to leave the meeting and he also questioned whether the resolution was aimed at trying to get him off the board.

“Last thing we need to do is start kicking people in the community out that think a little bit differently,” he said. “People can deny it all they want, but I believe this was directed at me. We’re going to have to get past this because COVID is not going away. Students are going to be shunned away from activities for not complying with your orders.”

Board member Anthony Silva said Cortinas was a main culprit in creating divisions within the community.

“He (Cortinas) has been the one primarily responsible for dividing this district and placating a certain group instead of representing the entire district,” he said. “He seems to feed off of that particular aspect of that argument and I think that’s what added to a lot of these problems. If we work together and try to come up with solutions rather than trying to divide us, I think we'd be much better off.”

Jackson also criticized Cortinas, and brought up an incident where “you called us stupid.”

“We can disagree but you don’t call people names, that’s what bullies do,” she said. “It’s been very frustrating to be called names and we’ve had rocks thrown at us. I understand both sides, but you can’t sit there and claim you haven’t been a bully when you’ve called us stupid. You’ve taken our staff and our superintendent to task, and if you do it publicly, you need to publicly apologize.”

Cortinas defended his statement claiming that he called the entire board “the smartest group of dumb people” for not listening to the community. He apologized to Jackson for any personal offense she took.

India's Economy Still Weak, Despite a Strong Third Quarter - The New York Times

Covid-19 essentially robbed the country of more than a year of badly needed economic growth. That’s lost ground that cannot be regained quickly.

NEW DELHI — India’s economy is limping back to life, and its wealthy consumers are finally returning to its malls and stores.

But at Electronics Desire, where the aisles are empty and the sales are slow, the lingering fears of India’s middle class — and the millions who aspire to join them someday — are on full display.

An appliances shop in Ramphal Chowk, a middle-class neighborhood in the New Delhi suburb of Dwarka, Electronics Desire is struggling through its weakest sales in months. Even last year, when a coronavirus lockdown at one point brought the economy to a virtual standstill, sales were better, said Tejendar Singh, the manager.

“Around this time last year we sold 15 to 20 dishwashers,” said Mr. Singh, explaining how customers bought the appliances to keep their maids, and potential Covid-19 infections, out of their homes. “This time, we couldn’t even sell two units.”

On Tuesday, India on paper reported a big jump in growth, of 8.4 percent, in the July-to-September period compared with a contraction of 7.4 percent for the same period a year earlier. But that heady number conceals lingering damage from Covid-19 to an economy that needs to generate a steady number of jobs to keep its young, vast population content. The country’s two waves since early last year have killed hundreds of thousands of people, pushed millions into poverty and robbed the country of more than a year of badly needed growth.

Compared with two years ago, before the coronavirus struck, economic output was 4 percentage points higher, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. Even that figure reflects pent-up demand rather than a healthy rise in gross domestic product, said Priyanka Kishore, the head of India and Southeast Asia for Oxford Economics, a research firm.

Manish Swarup/Associated Press

“If we talk about the structural hits and the G.D.P. level compared to pre-Covid baselines, it’s still 10 percent or so lower,” she said.

The weak and uneven recovery is putting pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to do something about growth. It is also putting renewed focus on longer-term problems that were weighing down India’s economy even before the pandemic: slowing demand, a manufacturing sector struggling to take off and shrinking labor participation.

India’s vaccination campaign has helped put the economy back on track. Ms. Kishore forecast growth of 7.8 percent next year, about 2.5 percentage points higher than what it was in 2019. Still, that would leave 2022 output 9 percent lower than she had forecast before the pandemic struck.

“We never really close the gap,” she said.

In the 1990s, India liberalized its economy, paving the way for more investment. Growth began surging in the next two decades, with a prospect that the country could someday replace China as the world’s factory floor. But India’s chaotic path to industrialization, and its inability to attract low-skilled manufacturing jobs that were moving out of China, are at the heart of its problems today, experts say.

Economists are particularly concerned about the slow rate of job creation and employment, which in turn hurts demand.

“This takes the form of a vicious circle,” said Mahesh Vyas, the chief executive of the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy. “If the employment rate keeps falling, they discourage fresh investments. If there are no fresh investments, then India cannot see fresh employment.”

Mr. Modi’s reluctance to spend big is holding the country back, Mr. Vyas said. Despite a 65 percent increase in tax collections this year as compared with last year, the government’s expenditure grew by only 10 percent, he said. “The government has not tried to address the problem of aggregate demand.”

In November, Mr. Modi’s finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, announced that the central government would disburse an additional $6.3 billion to states to encourage them to spend on infrastructure. In August, the government moved to revive the economy by selling stakes worth close to $81 billion in state-owned assets like airports, railway stations and stadiums. It remains to be seen if these measures will lead to more investment, economists say.

Atul Loke for The New York Times

Despite the overall weakness, India’s stock market is rallying, and rich and upper-middle-class consumers are rushing to its malls.

These are the kind of people who would normally be traveling to Italy, London or the United States to celebrate their holidays there, said Wilson Dass, a store manager at The Collective, a high-end chain selling items like cashmere overcoats and expensive leather bags. Instead, they are coming to his store, in the industrial hub of Gurugram.

Mr. Dass said he has sold many more Hackett jackets and Versace bags this year, especially recently, than in prior years.

Sales are up by more than 30 percent this year compared with 2019, he said, and the big winter shopping season hasn’t even begun.

His customers, a mix of business executives, wealthy wives and India’s “neo-rich,” want to show off their Karl Lagerfeld bags and Michael Kors tracksuits, he said.

“They have all this money,” Mr. Dass said. “They have to spend it somewhere.”

India’s economic statistics may be better at reflecting the ebullience of India’s economy than the damage. In 2015, the country changed how it calculated growth. The new approach, largely seen as more modern and approved by Mr. Modi’s predecessor, depended on numbers reported by the formal sector, like major companies. But it assumed that the country’s vast informal sector, which employs farmhands, day laborers, rickshaw drivers and many millions of others, would grow in tandem with the formal sector.

Defying that assumption, the pandemic disproportionately hurt India’s informal economy, which employs an estimated 90 percent of the country’s work force, though precise figures are elusive, because it is off the books. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 10 million Indians have lost stable, well-paying salaried jobs, according to Mr. Vyas.

Other economic indicators point to weakness. Industrial production contracted by more than 2 percent in September, and the trend is likely to get worse as manufacturers struggle to overcome major supply-chain bottlenecks.

In October, car and two-wheeler sales dropped by more than 25 percent compared with the same month in 2019, a 10-year low.

“India is tired, honestly, and it wants growth,” Ms. Kishore said.

On a recent morning, those sentiments were on display at Ramphal Chowk, at a row of stores selling electronics: each with a red carpet and potted palm trees placed strategically at the entrance to attract buyers, and each empty of customers.

Sales have declined by more than 50 percent as compared with 2019, said Akash Mittal, a salesman at one of the stores selling 52-inch television panels, washing machines, laptops and kitchen appliances.

“People have no money,” said Mr. Mittal, 31. “They’re worried when there will be the next lockdown, so they want to save whatever little they have.”

Mr. Mittal said his customers are thinking twice about buying even small items like electric kettles, mixers and grinders, appliances that are a staple in most Indian kitchens. “It’s not their fault,” he said. “They still have no jobs.”

At Electronics Desire next door, Mr. Singh, the manager, was lamenting the weak sales. Even during the October-to-November festival season of Diwali, a time when many Indian families buy new home appliances, overall sales were down by 90 percent compared with the same period last year, Mr. Singh said.

“If there are no sales, how will we pay rent, salaries?” asked Mr. Singh, 35, adding that he’d been forced to lay off about a third of his work force earlier this year.

“We had to cut costs somewhere.”

Front Row Motorsports sets 2022 driver lineup - NASCAR

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Front Row Motorsports set its 2022 driver lineup on Tuesday for its two NASCAR Cup Series teams and one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team.

On the Cup side, Michael McDowell will return to pilot the No. 34 Ford, while Todd Gilliland will move up to run the No. 38 Ford in 2022. With Gilliland moving up, Zane Smith will join the fold to run the No. 38 Ford in the Truck ranks.

RELATED: Who’s on the move for 2022 | Tracking the Cup lineups | See the 2022 Truck teams

The 2022 season will mark McDowell’s fifth straight full-time season with the team. He is coming off a 2021 season that saw him score his first Cup victory in the Daytona 500, make the NASCAR Playoffs for the first time, finish a career-best 16th in the standings and post a career high in top-10 finishes. The upcoming season will be McDowell’s 15th in the Cup Series. The veteran driver drove the organization’s Next Gen car earlier this month at the Charlotte oval test.

“I’m really looking forward to 2022 and the fresh start it brings across the sport,” McDowell said in a team release. “It’s an exciting time for the NASCAR Cup Series and for us at FRM. We have proven that we can win and now we want to find that consistency throughout the season to be even better.”

Gilliland moves up to the Cup ranks after two seasons driving trucks for the Bob Jenkins-owned organization and reaching the Truck Playoffs in both of those seasons. He had previously driven nearly two full-time seasons for Kyle Busch Motorsports. All told, he has two wins in the Truck Series. He will jump to the Cup ranks having made no starts in the Xfinity Series, and the 2022 Daytona 500 will mark his Cup debut.

The 21-year-old will compete for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in a class that also includes fellow Ford drivers Austin Cindric (No. 2 Team Penske) and Harrison Burton (No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing). Gilliland marks the fourth straight rookie teammate for McDowell — Matt Tifft in 2019, John Hunter Nemechek in 2020 and Anthony Alfredo in 2021. David Ragan was part of a three-car lineup in ’19 as well. Alfredo and the team parted ways earlier this month following the season finale at Phoenix.

RELATED: Anthony Alfredo to explore other options for 2022

“I feel like I’ve found a home at FRM,” Gilliland said. “I’ve been around the team when I was growing up and watching my dad race. I joined the truck team here and it has been a good place for my career. I can’t wait to step up into the NASCAR Cup Series. I know the challenges ahead, but I’m planning to be here and help grow with this team for a long time.”

In Smith, Front Row adds a driver that has made two straight Championship 4 appearances (the only driver to do that over that span) and one that has been the runner-up finisher in the standings in each of the last two seasons. In two seasons with GMS Racing, the 22-year-old nabbed three wins in the series.

“I competed against Front Row for wins this past season and I know how competitive the team is,” Smith said. “Bob Jenkins has given me a wonderful opportunity to race for the Truck Series championship again. More importantly, there is an opportunity to grow with them in the future.”

What You Might've Missed: Stout up front - Packers.com

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

On the Rams' first play of the second half, Lowry and Clark work in tandem for an impressive play. As is often the case, the Packers have just six defenders in the box against a six-man front that includes a tight end. Clark gets the initial double-team from Allen and LG David Edwards (73), but Lowry drives Corbett right into Allen, knocking him off of Clark, who then leaps over the downed bodies to make the tackle right at the line. Nice work.

Woman joins girl in middle school fight, kicking child in face - FOX 2 Detroit

A fight was caught on camera recently outside a middle school - but in this case, an adult joined in.

Roseville police believe the woman who joined that fight is about 30 years old. and will likely face felony assault charges. They are actively working to identify her and to prevent fights at the school.

The troubling video from Roseville Middle School is now the focus of a police investigation. It shows a woman in a gray hoodie jumping into a fight between two students. She’s said to be related to the girl in red.

They quickly overwhelm the other girl who we are not identifying —  the adult kicks her twice in the face.

"Very hard to watch. as a parent, it was hard to watch," said Roseville Deputy Police Chief Mitch Berlin.

READ NEXT: Massive illegal grow operation that caught fire was ticking time bomb say officials

Berlin said the incident in question happened last week around 7 a.m. before the start of classes. Someone called 911 and officers responded to the scene and rendered aid to the student who was beaten up.

The other student and adult had already left.

"Our detective bureau is working on it diligently and should have charges coming forth relatively soon," Berlin said. "And just hope that person decides to turn themselves in and expedite the process."

WATCH: Woman wanted for joining beating at Roseville middle school

FOX 2 reached out to Roseville Community Schools for comment but has yet to receive a response.

"That’s the worst problem, is that an adult is involved," said Brett Stone, a Roseville Middle School parent. "I mean it shouldn’t happen anyway. But now that an adult is involved, you would think something’s going to happen obviously."

"And the fact that we didn’t get notified about any of that," said Jamon Benson, another parent.

FOX 2: "A little offputting?"

"Definitely alarming, bro," Benson added.

These Roseville Middle School dads say the school did not notify them about the fight that took place on school property.

They say the woman in the video who joined the fight, should have broken it up or deescalated the situation.

"Definitely that’s what you supposed to do as an adult - common sense," said Benson. "No brainer."

"Definitely disturbing, you know, we got kids who go here man."

Police say Roseville Community Schools is cooperating with the investigation and that officers will be at the schools every morning to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Migrant crisis front and center in pope's Greece-Cyprus trip - Associated Press

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

LESBOS, Greece (AP) — When Pope Francis visited the Greek island of Lesbos in 2016, he was so moved by the stories he heard from families fleeing war in Iraq and Syria that he wept and brought a dozen refugees home with him.

Speaking to reporters on the way home that day, he held up a drawing handed to him by a child from the island’s sprawling refugee camp.

“Look at this one,” he said, revealing a bird neatly decorated in colored pencil, the word “peace” scrolled in English underneath it. “That’s what children want: Peace.”

Francis is returning to Lesbos this week for the first time since that defining day of his papacy, making a repeat visit to the island where hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants have passed through on their journey to Europe.

But he will find attitudes toward migrants here have only hardened in the intervening five years, as they have elsewhere in Europe, with tensions flaring on the border between European Union country Poland and Belarus and more deadly crossings — most recently in the English Channel.

Francis will first stop in Cyprus, another predominantly Orthodox Christian country in the Mediterranean that is also coping with a rise in refugees so significant that the government is seeking to stop processing asylum claims. As he did in Lesbos five years ago, Francis has arranged for several would-be refugees in Cyprus to travel to Italy after his visit, Cypriot officials say.

“They are our brothers and sisters,” Francis said in a video message to Greek and Cypriot faithful before the trip. “How many have lost their lives at sea! Today our sea, the Mediterranean, is a great cemetery.”

The pontiff starts his five-day trip on Thursday in Cyprus before heading to Greece on Saturday. He returns home on Monday.

While Francis’ renewed messages of compassion and welcome for migrants isn’t quite resonating in European capitals, they are a welcome salvo for the migrants themselves.

“His presence here will strengthen us, spiritually, and give us hope, some comfort,” said Christian Tango Muyaka, a 30-year-old asylum-seeker from Congo who is due to participate in a Sunday service with the pope at a new migrant camp on Lesbos.

“It gives us faith, it strengthens our faith,” he said.

Muyaka was separated from his wife and youngest daughter a year ago on the Turkish coast when they scrambled to board a boat bound for Greece. He has had no news of what happened to them since.

The north coast of Lesbos, just 10 kilometers (six miles) from Turkey, served as the main landing point for boats crossing into Europe during the 2015-16 migration crisis.

Piles of discarded orange life vests covered beaches, local fishermen helped daily rescue operations, and island residents took pride in setting up campaigns to provide hundreds of refugees arriving daily with food and clothing.

Fast forward five years, and the welcome mat is gone.

Migrants reaching the eastern Greek islands are now being held in detention camps, newly built and funded by the EU. Coast guard patrols are instructed to intercept dinghies and boats heading west and send them back to Turkey.

The overcrowded camp on Lesbos that Francis was taken to in 2016 burnt to the ground last year during protests against pandemic restrictions.

And along Greece’s land border with Turkey, a new steel wall and hi-tech sensor network have been installed to stop illegal crossings.

Eva Cosse at Human Rights Watch said Francis’ visit will serve as an urgent reminder of the human nature of the crisis.

“At a time when people are suffering and their rights are threatened, having the pope standing up for them and expressing these concerns is more important than ever,” she told The Associated Press. “Since the pope’s last visit, Greece continues to host large numbers of asylum-seekers while failing to protect their rights.

“Thousands seeking refuge in Greece are violently pushed back to Turkey. Migrant children face homelessness and a lack of access to health care, education and food. And nongovernmental groups face legislative restrictions and criminal harassment by officials.”

Greek authorities deny allegations of summary deportations. They argue that tougher border policing is necessary to counter hostility by several EU neighbors accused of exploiting the crisis and to limit arrival numbers to manageable levels.

“(Francis’) message is that we are one world, that we don’t have borders, that everybody is a child of God. Look, this is the religious point of view,” said Dimitris Vafeas, the deputy director of Mavrovouni migrant camp on Lesbos where the pope will visit.

“In practical terms, I think Greece has delivered ... so I think (Francis) will see calm faces. I don’t dare say happy faces, but calm for sure.”

Stewarts Creek Middle volunteered for Feed the Children and collected 4101 items for Thanksgiving meals - Wgnsradio

“Be awesome today.”

Three simple, yet powerful words Dr. Letoni Murry ends with every single morning as he wraps up the daily announcements at Stewarts Creek Middle School.

“It's another way of saying, all we have is today and let's make the most of what we have,” Murry explained. “We don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, so we take advantage of that day and try to be as awesome as we can.”

Schools were recently closed on November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

As a way being awesome, recognizing a trio of veterans on staff at the school and helping a local community partner — www.feedthechildren.org — Murry decided to make it a day of service. More than 100 volunteers — administrators, faculty, staff, students and even parents — volunteered their time as way of saying thank you for their own blessings.

“We wanted to overwhelm them with The Creek,” said Murry, who also noted volunteers from John Colemon and Wilson Elementary schools and Smyrna Middle were there for a three-hour session from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Beta Club from Rock Springs Middle regularly volunteers their time at Feed the Children.

Everyone was divided into teams to assemble and prepare personal care, food and Avon products for distribution.

More than 880 personal care boxes totally 14,960 pounds were prepared by the Stewarts Creek volunteers along with 520 individual food boxes totaling another 13,000 pounds of food were also prepared, according to Feed the Children. The boxes will be given to children and families throughout the southeast

“Makes you feel good when that many people show up,” Murry said.

In the week prior, Stewarts Creek Middle held a Thanksgiving food drive sponsored by the Family, Career & Community Leaders of America club, in which they collected more than twice their goal of 2,000 items — having donated 4,101 items to the Smyrna Nourish Food Bank.

FCCLA partnered with Apex Moving + Storage in their Move for Hunger initiative.

Apex provided all the boxes for shipping, delivered the items to Smyrna Nourish Food Bank and provided $300 worth of Amazon gift cards which were awarded to the top three teachers for the most Thanksgiving food items.

The first-place card worth $150 went to Jennifer Johnson, who collected 1,250 items. Second place went to Courtney Thornsberry (1,038) and third place went to Allen Kessinger (245). Thornsberry received $100 gift card, while Kessinger received $50.

“I think that resonates with kids and with our adults here,” Murry concluded, “and it proves our culture and our climate that we've been building and what we have here at The Creek.”

Next-Day Stats: 'Remarkable Rushes' & Middle Throws by 49ers Undermine Vikings - Vikings.com

Samuel's first touchdown of the game — a 20-yarder — exceeded expectations by 17 yards, which ranked 11th.

Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks wanted a holding penalty against San Francisco on that play, but it went uncalled.

Mitchell's longest run of the day gained 15 yards and occurred a play before the 20-yard score by Samuel. According to NGS, Mitchell was only expected to gain 3. The excess of 12 yards ranked 20th.

For the Vikings, Dalvin Cook recorded one remarkable rush during his 30-yard scamper in the third quarter before leaving the game with a shoulder injury. Cook's excess on the play was calculated at 24 yards, which ranked seventh in Week 12.

2. Over the middle

While the 49ers pushed the ball to the perimeter on run plays, they repeatedly attacked the middle of the field with passes by Garoppolo.

According to Next Gen Stats, 191 of Garoppolo's 230 passing yards were gained on throws to the middle. That's a whopping 82.6 percent.

Harrison Smith stepped in front of a throw over the middle to record his 29th career interception and end San Francisco's first possession, but the 49ers struck gold for much of the rest of the game.

Corey Seager contract details: Rangers lock up middle infield with former World Series MVP - Sporting News

The Rangers are going all out on the free agency market this offseason.

Texas has agreed to a deal with former Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager, one of the most prominent free agents available. The Rangers will now feature a middle-infield duo of Seager and Marcus Semien after they signed the latter to a seven-year, $175 million contract on Sunday. In addition to the middle-infield pairing, Texas also signed right-hander Jon Gray to a four-year, $56 million contract.

Seager was instrumental for the Dodgers, winning World Series MVP in 2020 when the team finally won it all. He was one of the team's best hitters this season, slashing .306/.394/.521 with 16 home runs. In 636 career games with Los Angeles, he has a slash line of .297/.367/.521 with 104 homers.

MORE: Max Scherzer believes not just in Mets' money, but chance to compete for World Series titles

Here are the details on how much he'll be making in Texas:

Corey Seager contract details

ESPN's Jeff Passan reports Seager will receive $325 million in his 10-year deal.

Unlike some other megadeals in the past, there are no opt-outs in his contract: Barring a trade, Seager will remain in a Rangers uniform for the next 10 years, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. In addition, Seager will also receive a $5 million signing bonus and a limited no-trade clause in his contract, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Even without the opt-out for the 27-year-old Seager, having 10 years guaranteed through his age 37 season is plenty of time to earn big bucks. He'll average $32.5 million per year, well more than some of the other massive contracts handed out to free agents in the past.

MORE: MLB free agency tracker

While it's a blow to the Dodgers not to be able to retain him, they were likely to have an uphill battle in matching that type of return. As former MLB executive and current Fangraphs writer Kevin Goldstein pointed out, the difference in state taxes between California and Texas already set the two sides up for a larger divide in what could be offered:

Largest free agent contracts

There have been some major contracts signed by players in free agency over the past couple years, but few can compare to Seager's deal.

Here are the largest free agent contracts signed in MLB history (does not include extensions).

Player Team First Year Years Value
Bryce Harper Phillies 2019 13 $330 million
Corey Seager Rangers 2022 10 $325 million
Gerrit Cole Yankees 2020 9 $324 million
Manny Machado Padres 2019 10 $300 million
Alex Rodriguez Yankees 2008 10 $275 million
Alex Rodriguez Rangers 2001 10 $252 million
Anthony Rendon Angels 2020 7 $245 million
Stephen Strasburg Nationals 2020 7 $245 million
Albert Pujols Angels 2012 10 $240 million
Robinson Cano Mariners 2014 10 $240 million

Seager's deal is already the second-largest free agent contract in total value in MLB history. Among shortstops, he's getting paid right up among the biggest names. The Mets extended Francisco Lindor on a 10-year, $341 million contract, while the Padres locked up Fernando Tatis Jr. longterm with a 14-year, $340 million extension.

MORE: Rays sign uber-prospect Wander Franco to massive deal

Corey Seager career earnings

This is the first big deal of Seager's career. He has previously received his money through arbitration with the Dodgers, with his largest year having come last season: He was paid $13.7 million, according to Spotrac. All told, Seager has made $24.69 million in his career, per Spotrac.

This isn't the first big deal in his family, however. His brother, Kyle Seager, signed a seven-year, $100 million extension with the Mariners back in 2014. According to ESPN Stats & Info, they are the first two brothers to both sign on to separate $100 million deals.

Foligno Finding a Home at the Net Front - BlueJackets.com

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

BOSTON - Nick Foligno is embracing being a nuisance.

With a bevy of high-end skill on the ice when the Bruins' first power-play unit jumps over the boards, he knows his role is to create havoc and open up space for Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak, and Charlie McAvoy to work their magic.

And on Sunday night, the veteran forward did it to perfection.

Foligno planted himself in front of Vancouver netminder Jaroslav Halak and helped Boston cash in for two power-play markers in the third period - the tying tally from Marchand at 8:45 and the winner from Pastrnak with 3:24 to go.

"I think they're making me feel at home," said Foligno. "Those are four pretty darn good players to play with and I think I just know what my role needs to be there. Obviously being the net front and trying to make plays, not die with me, whether it's keeping the puck alive on a retrieval or creating havoc in front so the goalie has a harder time seeing the puck.

"It's only gonna help those guys do what they do. You saw Marchy do his thing last night. It's fun playing with those guys. Just more importantly as a unit, coming up big when the team needs it. I thought that we did that last night. I think it gives us a lot of confidence moving forward."

Foligno said that ultimately his biggest responsibility has been to create that little bit of extra time so that his power-play partners can capitalize on the seams and openings in the opposing team's kill.

"It's stuff you learn over the years, the little parts of hockey that allow you to win," said Foligno, who pointed to Chicago's Jonathan Toews as one of the best at playing the net front on the power play. "If you can make a guy a second late to get to a check, it only creates a better advantage for your power play. Those guys don't need much time.

"When you've got Marchy on the half wall and Bergy…Pasta on the backdoor, Charlie up top - that's a lot of weapons. If you can give them a split second more to make their play, I think it's gonna help our team."

Video: Foligno talks with the media on Monday morning at WIA

Foligno's work at the top of the crease in recent games has helped the B's top unit find its footing after a sluggish start to the season, while impressing coach Bruce Cassidy in the process.

"Nick is a true net presence," said Cassidy, whose club has jumped to fifth in the league with a 25.5% success rate on the power play. "He likes to live at the top of the blue paint whereas Taylor [Hall] was moving around a little more. And that's fine, each has different attributes.

"With Nick being at the top there [Sunday] night and how we saw [Vancouver] killing, we thought it was good for him to plant himself there and we can make some plays around that. He did a real good job in there occupying space."

Foligno, meanwhile, also appears to be finding his all-around game after missing eight games earlier this season due to an upper-body injury. The 34-year-old has picked up three assists in his last three games and developed some quick chemistry with new linemates Trent Frederic and Karson Kuhlman against the Canucks.

"I actually liked it a lot," Foligno said of the trio. "Especially for those guys stepping back into the lineup…Freddy, coming off a head injury, sometimes you can be a little hesitant, but I thought he just dove right in. They're fun because they're straight-line guys, hard workers and they talk a lot, too, which is nice.

"There's a lot of communication on the ice which I think just helps when you're trying to figure somebody out. I think we can be a real good line for our team, especially the energy aspect. The whole night, we pretty played in their end. It was fun. It was a great start."

Marchand to Have Hearing

The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced on Monday morning that Brad Marchand "will have a hearing for Slew-footing on Vancouver's Oliver Ekman-Larsson" on Sunday night.

"There was nothing called in the game," said Cassidy. "They do revisit certain incidents. I think the precedent for the most part this year has been a fine if they feel that it's deserving of it. I guess we'll see what happens there.

"I thought it was two guys battling for a puck, got tangled up. They'll have to decide. You see a lot of those in the game. They're typically along the boards, more often than in the open ice. I've seen a lot of it this year."

Blidh Sidelined by Injury

Anton Blidh left Sunday night's win in the third period after taking a hit from behind from Ekman-Larsson in the third period that led to the power play on which Pastrnak potted the winning goal. Cassidy said on Monday that Blidh is out against the Red Wings and, "at least for the short term…and could be a little longer. We don't think it's anything long term."

Should Marchand face any supplemental discipline, the Bruins could be without two of their left wingers, meaning that Erik Haula and/or Jake DeBrusk - both healthy scratches against the Canucks - could find themselves back in the lineup on Tuesday night.

"They can both play the wing. I imagine someone will slot in," said Cassidy. "I will say, I liked Freddy in the middle. I thought that line had a different dimension, thought he had some good looks. I thought he looked more comfortable there, Foligno on his strong side. I thought [Karson Kuhlman] added a lot on the wing. I thought that line was excellent.

"You want to be careful, you don't want to mess [with it] - but you play the hand you're dealt if something should happen with our left wingers. I know Blidh's out, so we'll have to put someone in there without messing up too much. Think we'd just slot someone in there as opposed to messing with all the other lines."

Video: Cassidy talks at WIA on Monday morning

Wait, There's More

  • Linus Ullmark will make his second consecutive start on Tuesday night against the Detroit Red Wings as Cassidy aims to get the netminder "into a rhythm" after sitting out two games last week with an undisclosed injury.
  • Foligno was asked on Monday what he has learned about Patrice Bergeron during the few months he's been his teammate, and before providing a lengthy answer about the Boston captain's preparation and leadership joked, "He's perfect. It drives me nuts."
  • The Bruins held an optional practice on Monday afternoon with about a dozen players taking to the sheet at Warrior Ice Arena.

Xiomara Castro Vows New Era for Honduras but Is Tied to Past - The New York Times

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Xiomara Castro, headed toward becoming her country’s next president, promises to expunge its legacy of corruption, but change may be tempered by her establishment ties and conservative opposition.

MEXICO CITY — The Honduras opposition candidate, Xiomara Castro, inched closer to an astounding presidential victory on Monday, promising a new era of democratic inclusion in a nation where despair has driven hundreds of thousands to the U.S. border seeking refuge in recent years.

Ms. Castro, 62, held a 20 percentage point lead over the candidate of the incumbent National Party with 51 percent of the ballot boxes counted. The results of the Sunday vote appeared to show a stunning repudiation of the National Party’s 12-year rule, which was shaped by pervasive corruption, dismantling of democratic institutions and accusations of links with drug cartels.

Thousands of Hondurans poured into the streets to celebrate what they believed was Ms. Castro’s insurmountable lead, shooting fireworks and singing “JOH, JOH, and away you go,” a reference to the initials of the deeply unpopular outgoing President Juan Orlando Hernández.

Many voiced hopes that Ms. Castro, should she prevail, would be able to cure the chronic ills that have mired the country in poverty and desperation for decades — widespread graft, violence, organized crime and mass migration.

They also remained wary of the National Party possibly trying to commit electoral fraud in the results that remained uncounted, given that the party’s leaders may face corruption or even drug trafficking charges after leaving office.

“We will recover Honduras, because we are now governed by criminals,” said Mariela Sandres, a student, who celebrated outside Ms. Castro’s campaign headquarters on Sunday night.

The National Party refused to concede defeat, asserting that it will win once all the votes are counted. But in a positive signal for Ms. Castro, the president of Honduras’s business chamber congratulated her on her apparent victory, offering to work with her on rebuilding the country’s economy.

Moises Castillo/Associated Press

Ms. Castro in some ways represents a break with Honduras’s traditional politics. Her commanding lead, in what has been a largely peaceful election so far, also appeared to present a democratic reprieve from a wave of authoritarianism sweeping Central America.

If the current returns stand, she will become the first female president in a deeply conservative nation, and its first leader to be democratically elected on a socialist platform.

She has promised to rebuild the country’s weakened democracy and bring in all sectors of Honduran society to overhaul a state that has served the interests of a small group of elites since it was a Spanish colony centuries ago. In a speech on Sunday night, Ms. Castro told supporters that she would immediately begin talks with political allies and opponents alike to form a government of national unity.

“Never again will the power be abused in this country,” she said.

Ms. Castro said she would consider legalizing abortion in limited cases and would bring back international corruption investigators who were forced out by Mr. Hernández after they started examining suspected graft in his inner circle.

Yet, Ms. Castro is also deeply tied to Honduras’ political establishment. And her ability to meet campaign promises is likely to be severely challenged by opposition from the more conservative sectors in congress and within her own political coalition.

At her election rallies, Ms. Castro capitalized on Hondurans’ widespread repudiation of Mr. Hernández’s rule. But she has been vague about what her own government would do, beyond showering Hondurans with new subsidies and repealing the most unpopular measures of the current government.

During the closing campaign rally in the business capital of San Pedro Sula, she struggled to remember what those measures were. “What’s that other law?” she asked the crowd, as she attempted to list Mr. Hernández’s policies that she would overturn.

Ms. Castro’s candidacy has been shaped by her marriage to Mel Zelaya, a wealthy Honduran landowner and former president who was deposed in a military coup in 2009, after having tried to emulate the policies of Venezuela’s president at the time, Hugo Chávez.

Mr. Zelaya, who remains a polarizing figure in Honduras, is the founder and the head of Ms. Castro’s political party and has served as her campaign manager. Should her victory be confirmed, he is widely expected to play a prominent role in the administration led by Ms. Castro, who had been living mostly outside Honduras since the coup.

Fredy Rodriguez/Reuters

The prospect of a shadow government led by Mr. Zelaya could create tensions with Ms. Castro’s more conservative supporters, who voted for her to break with Mr. Hernández but are wary that Honduras could renew its alliance with Venezuela and Cuba.

Ms. Castro’s ambitious socialist proposals could also complicate relations with the United States, which many in Honduras blame for supporting the controversial elections that brought the National Party to power after the coup.

In her campaign program, Ms. Castro called for creation of a Constituent Assembly that would rewrite Honduras’s Constitution. Mr. Zelaya’s effort as president to draft a new constitution was a main reason for the coup from the conservative military and business elites, who feared a leftist power grab in a country that has been deeply allied with the United States.

She has sought to assuage the elites’ fears by courting businessmen, bringing in technocratic advisers, allying herself to center-right parties and meeting with the United States diplomats.

Ms. Castro has also significantly scaled back her progressive social agenda to dampen conservative attacks. After initially supporting abortion ban exemptions, as well as sex and race education in schools, she recently said these policies should be put to public debate, and began to emphasize her Catholic upbringing.

Ms. Castro’s promises to reduce inequality and cut the cost of living will be complicated by the heavy debt burden left to her by Mr. Hernández’s outgoing government. And her plans to root out corruption could be compromised by accusations of graft made against the family of Mr. Zelaya, and the former president’s personal ties to discredited political elites.

The prospects for change in Ms. Castro’s administration will depend heavily on her coalition’s strength in the new congress. The electoral council is yet to announce any results from congressional races.

“It’s going to be highly difficult to govern without a majority in congress,” said Pedro Barquero, the campaign chief for the Savior of Honduras Party, which is allied to Ms. Castro.

Through her campaign staff, Ms. Castro has declined multiple interview requests before and since the vote.

For his part, Mr. Zelaya said he wanted to rebuild good relations with the United States, calling it Honduras’s vital partner.

“I think the U.S. has understood that sectors of their government have brought the country to an abyss” following the coup, he said. “We hope the Biden administration has learned the lesson and are willing to work with us.”

But Mr. Zelaya declined to describe his current position on Venezuela, which since he was deposed has slid into economic collapse and authoritarianism. All he has said regarding Venezuela’s crisis is that “the people have the governments that they deserve.”
