Middle Tennessee Earns Dominant Win in First Exhibition - GoBlueRaiders.com

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — It took a quarter, but when the Lady Raiders got rolling, they never stopped in Middle Tennessee's first exhibition win of the season.

The Lady Raiders rode a hot second quarter, a balanced offense and stifling defensive effort to a dominant victory on Friday afternoon in the Murphy Center, as the MT triumphed 103-49 over Lane College.

Middle Tennessee led in nearly every statistical category against the NCAA Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference side, outrebounding the Dragons 46-35 and limiting Lane to just 45 shots from the field compared to 66 shots for MT.

Six Lady Raiders scored in double digits on Friday, led by freshman Jalynn Gregory, who dropped 16 points with five three-pointers in her first action in a Middle Tennessee uniform. Junior Courtney Whitson posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling in 11 rebounds in the post for the Lady Raiders.

Senior Dor Saar, also making her Middle Tennessee debut after transferring in as a grad transfer from Maine, added in 10 points of her own to go with four assists. Redshirt sophomore Kseniya Malashka, also getting her first on court action after sitting out last season following her transfer from VCU, was second on the team with 15 points on 6-of-8 from the field.

Freshman Courtney Blakely posted stellar numbers in relief of Saar at point guard, drilling her second three of the night to take Middle Tennessee past the century mark in points, finishing with fourteen points and six assists. Freshman guard Skye Payne also finished in double figures, contributing 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.

The first quarter showcased some early season rustiness and tight defense, as both teams combined for 15 personal fouls and a 8-for-28 clip from the field. Middle Tennessee missed their first eight three point attempts, until Kseniya Malashka drilled a three from the top of the key to give MT a 14-13 lead at the quarter break.

MT started the second quarter hot and never cooled off, riding the momentum of a mid-quarter 19-0 run to a 46-22 halftime lead. The Lady Raiders excelled defensively, holding the Dragons to 25 percent from the field (and just 12 shots overall), while finding their three point stroke, drilling five three pointers as a team in the second quarter.

The third quarter featured more suffocating Middle Tennessee defense, and the Dragons were held without a field goal for more than seven minutes to open the half. The Lady Raiders' hot three point shooting continued in the frame, as MT went 5-for-10 from beyond the arc to give themselves a 71-32 advantage at the quarter break.

The Lady Raiders iced the game in the fourth quarter behind continued hot shooting, as head coach Rick Insell rotated his squad, with MT outscoring the Dragons 32-17 in the final frame.

Middle Tennessee will have one more scrimmage before starting their season in earnest, taking on UT Southern (formerly Martin Methodist) on Thursday, November 4. Tipoff is schedule for 6 pm in the Murphy Center.

Trump Allies Are Prominent at Saudi Investment Conference - The New York Times

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

But the Biden administration sent only a deputy commerce secretary to the high-profile gathering, amid shifts in global politics and diplomatic strains.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — The wealthy and the powerful of the financial world descended on the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh this past week for Saudi Arabia’s annual investment conference, a reminder that even amid shifting politics, diplomatic strains and pandemic constraints, money is a surefire magnet.

Executives hugged and fist-bumped in the lobby of the hotel, where four years ago the kingdom’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, confined hundreds of his nation’s elites in an anti-corruption crackdown. They sipped coffee and mineral water in the hotel’s cafes.

They piled into a string of black sedans for dinners with clients and colleagues around Riyadh. They even made jovial conversation in the Ritz’s makeshift clinic, where the queue for the Covid-19 tests required to return home to other countries stretched at times to an hour or more.

But global politics poked through at times.

In sideline conversations, some U.S. business leaders spoke in stage whispers of the drugging and dismemberment of the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 — a killing that an American intelligence report concluded had been approved by the crown prince, known by his initials, MBS. Yet when the crown prince made a brief appearance at the conference on Tuesday, he was welcomed with a standing ovation.

There was also a message in the list of attendees.

Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary under President Donald J. Trump, walked the halls between a fireside chat with the Bahraini finance minister and a series of meetings. The private-equity executive Stephen Schwarzman, a loyal adviser to Mr. Trump until late in his presidency, bemoaned the vilification of fossil fuel companies from the conference dais. The longtime chemical executive Andrew Liveris, who had been an adviser to Mr. Trump on manufacturing, praised Saudi Arabia’s economic expansion plans on the sidelines of the gathering.

Guests affiliated with the Biden administration, which has adopted a chillier posture toward the Saudis than did Mr. Trump, were in far shorter supply. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen did not attend. Nor did officials from the White House or the State Department. The sole Biden official who spoke at the conference was Don Graves, deputy secretary of commerce. Mr. Graves met privately with the Saudi commerce minister and participated in a fifteen-minute panel discussion on the topic of global trade. He was whisked away by a coterie of aides immediately after that and declined to answer questions about the event.

For many of those in attendance, the big draw was Saudi Arabia’s $450 billion sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, whose governor, Yasir al-Rumayyan, typically hosts the event.

Allocating money into foreign investment funds has always been a part of Saudi Arabia’s strategic tool kit. It’s a tactic the kingdom has relied on heavily in recent years, as the crown prince has sought to encourage overseas investment into his home country to fund Vision 2030, his blueprint for economic growth and diversification. His philosophy appears to be that by sharing Saudi wealth in markets like the U.S., Britain, Japan and Russia, he is inviting those countries to reciprocate.

During the Trump era, that approach was welcomed. Mr. Trump selected Riyadh as the location of his first state visit in 2017; with his encouragement, a flurry of U.S.-Saudi business deals — including a package of arms sales to the kingdom that was predicted to generate $110 billion over a ten-year period — were announced during the trip.

Under Mr. Biden, however, business relationships have been far less of an emphasis, and relations with the Saudis and the crown prince far more complicated. “I don’t think anything’s broken that badly that it can’t be repaired, but there’s perception issues,” said Mr. Liveris, who also advised the Obama administration when Mr. Biden was vice president.

Iman Al-Dabbagh for The New York Times

That has not appeared to have impeded the warmer connections between Mr. Trump’s team and the Saudis.

Mr. Mnuchin, who started a $2.5 billion investment fund in July, has already raised money from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund. Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law and former senior adviser, is launching an investment firm called Affinity Partners, which has signaled interest in a potential investment from the Public Investment Fund, according to someone familiar with Mr. Kushner’s plans. (A recent report pegged the potential size of that investment at as much as $2 billion.)

Mr. Kushner, who was recently in the Middle East for events related to his charitable entity, the Abraham Accords Institute for Peace, did not attend the conference. But he is actively assembling an investment team for his new fund, and there is no indication that the close rapport he developed with Prince Mohammed during his father-in-law’s administration has diminished since Mr. Trump left office.

One Middle East-based financier, who attended the conference but spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive topic, said the Saudi funding of Mr. Kushner’s new initiative would be in line with his region’s embrace of “soft power.” He was referring to the leverage that comes from providing financial assistance to people who are in the sphere of influence with current and former politicians and their parties.

In the U.S., there is no law to restrict or prohibit former executive-branch officials from receiving investment money from foreign counterparts after leaving their government jobs. But ethics experts say that deals like Mr. Mnuchin’s, which occurred just months after he left the Treasury Department, would be well served by the same sort of mandatory cooling-off periods that prevent members of Congress and executive branch officials from lobbying their former colleagues after they leave government.

“People are in government temporarily as public employees, and they’re doing deals and lots of favors for people, including foreign countries. Then they go out into the private sector and are finding they made a lot of friends in government and now they’re being rewarded,” said Richard Painter, the former chief ethics counsel to President George W. Bush. “It’s very worrisome.”

Mr. Mnuchin declined to comment on whether he feared the perception of a conflict of interest at the conference. Mr. Kushner did not respond to a request for comment.

One notable no-show was Mr. al-Rumayyan, the Saudi official who oversees the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund. He did not deliver his opening remarks or preside over scheduled panel discussions with Wall Street chief executives.

A spokesman for the wealth fund did not respond to questions about Mr. al-Rumayyan’s absence, but four attendees with close ties to him said he had tested positive for Covid-19. He was even absent from the week’s signature evening get-together: an opulent dinner for scores of event speakers at his home in Riyadh, the capital.

Blackstone’s Mr. Schwarzman was attending the conference for the third time, paying his respects to his existing Saudi relationships. As an informal adviser to the Trump administration on the economy and on trade deals, he was present for Mr. Trump’s 2017 state visit to Riyadh and announced a landmark investment deal of up to $20 billion with the Saudis during it. He broke ranks with Mr. Trump after the Capitol riot. But his business relationship with the Saudis, who have long been investors in various Blackstone funds, continues.

During his Tuesday-morning panel in front of a packed ballroom, Mr. Schwarzman appeared in high spirits. He promoted a book by the money manager Ray Dalio, who was sitting next to him on the stage, joking, “I don’t even get a commission for this.”

He invoked the financial strains that the environmental movement has put on oil and gas companies, arguing that the difficulty they are having borrowing money could ultimately crimp energy supplies, leading to social and political unrest. He traded quips with his fellow panelists over whether they’d prefer to invest in gold, dollars, euros, or Bitcoin.

Another attendee, Anthony Scaramucci, the investment fund manager who served briefly as Mr. Trump’s communications director at the White House only to break with him later, said he was actively trying to raise money from Saudi investors.

“I’m raising money,” he said at the conference. “All day and all night.”

Mr. Scaramucci noted that no one should be penalized for raising capital with former government contacts once they leave politics. Despite his many public attacks in recent years on Mr. Trump, he praised both Mr. Mnuchin and Mr. Kushner, whom he called “a very smart guy.”

“To me, it’s a free market,” Mr. Scaramucci said. “I’m not like these guys throwing eggs and tomatoes at this stuff.”

Giveth and taketh in Middle Sea Race >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News - Scuttlebutt Sailing News

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the famous 600nm races for offshore competition. The 606nm course, essentially a clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily starting and finishing at the island nation of Malta, the 42nd edition delivered drama – both good and bad.

A dream weather system allowed Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo (USA) to take line honors and smash the outright record, while the VPLP/Verdier designed 100 foot racing maxi Comanche, skippered by Mitch Booth, took over seven hours off the monohull race record. Good times!

Comanche also held the overall lead until they relinquished it upon the arrival of the JPK 1180 Sunrise, which had earlier won the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race, with a double victory by British owner Thomas Kneen as a David and Goliath outcome against a maxi nearly three times her waterline length and rating almost twice as high.

And then turmoil occurred.

Not long after Sunrise’s finish, the weather was forecast to build substantially from the north-east thrashing the northern coast of Malta and the seas down to Lampedusa. Aside from making an uncomfortable final stretch for the race, it also poised trouble for a course that must enter Marsamxett Harbour to finish.

Among the 114 yachts that started, some 23 boats were still on the racecourse amid this serious and adverse change to the weather forecast, and as the harbor entrance was considered too dangerous, the Royal Malta Yacht Club Race Committee invoked an alternative finish line in the South Comino Channel as per the sailing instructions.

Shortening the course once boats have finished is far from typical, but a condition within the Sailing Instructions anticipates how the changing weather can create a safety issue for yachts yet to finish. When this condition was invoked, which uses a finish line all yachts cross for the customary course, but shortens the distance by approximately 13 nm, the recalculated results awarded the overall win to Comanche.

What followed was four protests by Sunrise (Case 2, Case 6, Case 7, Case 11) which all came to the same jury finding, which was how the race committee’s decision to select the alternative finishing line position was consistent with SI 11.3 and was not an improper action. Here are some comments on Scuttlebutt’s Facebook page:

• Daryl Conyers: Money and big name professional don’t like getting beaten by little 40 footer amateurs.

• James Walker: Apparently, it wouldn’t be sailing if the results were always decided on the water…. It’s a trend that has soiled this sport for a long time.

• Ian Baylis: Congratulations Sunrise, well deserved after an amazing season. Luckily you didn’t take the same drugs as the race committee so are well aware who the true winner is.

• James Kent: How you can change the course after yachts have finished it beyond me.

• Maurice van der Heijden: Just the strangest decision. Only true winner based on performance shown is Sunrise racing team. Congrats!

About the Race:
The Rolex Middle Sea Race was established as the result of sporting rivalry between great friends, Jimmy White and Alan Green, two Englishmen residing in Malta, together with Paul and John Ripard, two Maltese members of the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

Jimmy, Alan (later to become the Race Director of the Royal Ocean Racing Club), Paul and John would eventually map a course designed to offer an exciting race in different conditions to those prevailing in the immediate Maltese coastal waters.

The 606nm course, essentially a clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily starting and finishing in Malta, would be slightly longer than the RORC’s longest race, the Rolex Fastnet. The resulting course is the same as used today, although sailed in the reverse direction. The Rolex Middle Sea Race course record has been broken on five occasions since the inaugural edition in 1968.

The 2021 race started with 114 yachts on October 23.

The course record, established by George David’s 90-foot Rambler (USA) in 2007, is 47hrs 55mins 03 secs. The multihull record of 49 hours, 25 minutes, 1 second was set by the Multi70 Maserati in 2016.

Neptune Beach resident brings Halloween horror and fun to his front yard - ActionNewsJax.com

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — People looking for a fright on Halloween had to go no farther than Neptune Beach.

One resident turned his front lawn into a spooky, outdoors haunted house for all to enjoy, right at the corner of South Street and 1st Street.

It’s a lot less scary during the day but at night you’re sure to jump at the South Street Freak Show.

LINK: Halloween events taking place in the Jacksonville area this weekend

“I’ve always been a big Halloween fan. One of my favorite holidays,” the show’s creator Sean Taylor said.

The man behind the spooky setup is Sean Taylor. He said the freak show is in its third year. It all started with one clown and grew into what you see today.

“This year I decided to bring in more characters,” Taylor said.

He added more frights, more terror, and more fun.

“We actually took a couple photos, family photos in front of the house,” neighbor Karla Brady said.

The spooky attraction is well known to neighbors and well known online. It even comes with its own hashtag: #southstfreakshow

Neighbors have stopped throughout October to take their own photos with the sinister decor.

Taylor said watching people go out of their way to visit makes all the work worthwhile.

“Basically, you have everyone from toddlers to senior citizens that come here. They walk through. They jump. They get spooked, but they’re usually laughing and having a good time,” Taylor said.

His future plans only include more.

“At this point I’m kind of obligated to the community to keep it going. So I guess it’s going to happen forever,” Taylor said.

The display will be on until midnight on Halloween night. It comes down the next day.

Israeli military Home Front exercise to simulate domestic unrest for first time - Haaretz

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

The National Home Front Exercise, which will begin on Sunday and last for five days, will involve practice by all relevant entities and agencies in a scenario where Israel has to deal with fighting on multiple fronts, including from within.

As part of the lessons of the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip in May, in which the security system was surprised by the intensity of clashes and disturbance of the peace in Israeli cities, particularly mixed and Arab localities, the National Home Front Exercise will open for the first time with a scenario led by the police. In the simulation, a security incident causes clashes in Israeli cities and blockage of main transport arteries, peace disturbances and attempts to impede the Israel Defense Forces’ ability to mobilize to its required arena.

“A new reference was added to the scenario, that of the internal arena, which is a lesson from [the May operation in Gaza,] Guardian of the Walls,” explained Yoram Laredo, head of the National Emergency Management Authority. “The first day of the exercise will be dedicated to Israel Police practicing violent disturbances against a multi-arena nationalist background, and that will be a day in which the police get a clearer view of the challenges facing them in terms of optimizing their force-building.”

The exercise will require Border Police platoons operating in the West Bank to report to friction points, after being relieved by IDF soldiers. Concurrently, the Border Police reserve call-up array will be practiced as part of the drill. “This exercise is also an excellent opportunity for all government ministries to understand the implications, starting with disruptions in energy supplies. We’re talking about 24-hour country-wide power cuts,” Laredo added.

After criticism raised over the cooperation between the organizations since the Second Lebanon War and as presented in recent state’s comptroller reports, the exercise will be run by a joint administration of the emergency authority and the Home Front Command, Israel Police, The Fire Department, Magen David Adom, with all government ministries participating.

The IDF, through the Home Front Command, is expected to enter the exercise only a few days in. In the first stage the army is expected to be managing fighting and preparations, whereas in the second stage it will begin assisting the civilian array.

Home Front Command Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Itzik Bar detailed the scenarios Israelis can expect in the next flare-up in the north in a conference call to military reporters. Including the familiar scenarios of “targeted fire on localities adjacent to the border,” he noted a new scenario for civilians living on the border with Lebanon. “We’re talking about dangerous substances which the enemy has, medical substances that dissipate in the air that can impact the population if they come in contact.”

According to estimates, during fighting Israel is expected to be under a widespread missile attack, most of which will target the north, but the center of the country will also be under significant attack during the early days. “We will jointly exercise evacuation and intake of the population, extended stays in protected spaces due to the volume of fire,” said Bar. “For the first time, we will deploy the civilian aid battalion as well, a logistics battalion solely devoted to supporting the civilian space, both to allow for supplies to civilians staying in shelter for extended periods, and for other issues.”

The forces will practice evacuating hospitals, retirement homes and special needs facilities. “We’ll evacuate casualties, use soldiers to play wounded, road and chopper evac; we’ll practice the intake at hospitals around the country. We’ll practice the whole process – from planning to intake. We’re practicing because we realize that the hospitals will likely have to take quite a few casualties, both civilian and military,” Bar said.
